Wedding Workout Prep

16 Dec

Sickness strikes… and with it, no motivation for health and fitness.  I’m talking zero, zilch, nada.  Funny how that works huh?  All I want to do is sleep, eat, and hibernate.  I have had a cold for about 3 weeks now (brilliant timing right?)… and let me tell you – no fun at all. I’ve sort of been taking it easy fitness wise just to get through the shows with what knee/vocal/sick strength I have…but with White Christmas finally over (tear), my attention now is turning to the event just under a month away!

Goodbye White Christmas!

Here’s our last White Christmas promo – from the TV station.  It was so fun, I was like a fancy person!! Hard to believe that our 4 weekends of shows have come to a close.  It was such a wonderful opportunity and seriously the time of my life. Such sweet memories. Though  I must say, I definitely feel the need to recover. I am le tired.

Wedding Plan!

Alright folks, I’ve got a confession.  With 32 days until the wedding… I feel like 85% of my posts over the next 6 weeks will be wedding related in some way, shape, or form.  For this I deeply apologize, BUT it’s pretty much the only thing on my brain.  I’m just SO focused on it that it’s really hard to work up some passion about my usual topics!  And let’s be serious… weddings are fun.  And soon it will be over and then you’ll NEVER have to see a wedding post again*  Cue the celebrating or sadness.

One of the best decisions I’ve ever made in terms of “Wedding Workout Prep” is starting my road to healthier habits and fitness long before I was even engaged. Adam and I had a priority of getting healthier and using each other as accountability partners.  We went through the growing pains of learning those new habits and getting used to working out on a daily (or at least weekly ;)) basis.  This process occurred while we WEREN’T under the stress of wedding planning.   Which meant… by the time we were engaged we were more in maintenance mode vs. “Oh crud, I really want to love these pictures… time to tone up” mode.

Can’t wait to wear this in a month!

I now have realized I need a plan– mainly because I’ll no longer be tapping/dancing/sweating to death every night AND the holidays will hit here soon.  The sickness has also bumped me off my fitness bandwagon a bit, time to get back at it.  I want to enjoy some delicious holiday food, but people I have to fit in that dress! For the past few weeks this is what I’ve been up to:

Due to knee issues I’ve sort of given up on completing a full round of P90X (the plyo/legs workouts are just not possible).  So I’ve been doing sort of a P90X/ChaLean/Yoga hybrid.  Very fancy, right? Between the sickness and shows I’ve been getting in my workouts a solid 4 times a week (except this last week when the sickness was ridiculous… I did nothing.  Yep no working out.  At all. Strange).  I won’t complain, but it is a bit strange after being a bit more regimented.  I want to up my workouts to feel my best going into the wedding, and help with any pre-wedding anxiety or stress that may hit.  I just always feel better when I’m working out.  Fact.

I’ve done a pretty good job overall sticking to my “Eat What’s in the Bag” diet.  This fancy ‘diet’ was sort of coined by Adam.  I pack my lunch box in the morning full of everything to eat the whole day: veggies, fruit, lunch, snacks etc. Everything in there is good for me, and if I just eat what’s in there and don’t stray… I’m good to go.  It’s incredibly easy to follow, and prepping my food once a week (usually Sunday evening) means I just throw the bag together in about 15 minutes each morning. It’s amazing. I’m planning to keep this going (well indefinitely because I really like it).  But my biggest hurdle will be not gorging over the holidays.  Must be (sort of) strong.

For a little fun, let’s compare the MONTH BEFORE wedding prep for Adam and Kelly:

Kelly’s Plan (or Goals ;))

  • Workout 6 days a week (continue P90X/ChaLean/Yoga).
  • Bring my videos/equipment to keep up my schedule during the holidays (SO hard!)
  • Prioritizing healthy eating.  Enjoy holiday treats in moderation. (Can that even be done!?)
  • Making Adam work out with me when he’s with me for my own accountability :)
  • Keep doing the habits I have learned, don’t panic or do anything extreme!

Adam’s Plan

  • Work 14 hours a day 6 days a week
  • Try not to kill patients
  •  Sleep when possible
  • Work on wedding stuff in any remaining free time
  • Eat as much food as possible to gain weight.  Operation Make Adam Not Super Skinny has begun.

It’s so cute, when we first got engaged Adam had all these goals about us both getting into great shape for the wedding… and then reality hit.  He’s in his intern year of residency, so working out just isn’t really a priority.  I keep telling Adam that he’s just wearing a suit so honestly it doesn’t matter.  As long as the suit fits!!  Adam has the terrible luck that when he doesn’t workout – he loses weight.  What a poor dear.  So I’ve been reminding him weekly to eat up!  The last time I saw him he had a small pudge, so efforts are working :)

My big takeaway: Keep on keeping on.  I really don’t want to put pressure on myself to do anything extreme or unhealthy, because let’s face it – a wedding is a lot of pressure.  And especially our 300 person (fingers crossed it will be less) wedding… that’s a lot of eyes on me.  I don’t want to let this pressure manifest itself to something unhealthy.  Just take every day as a chance to be healthy and active.

Wish me luck!

You are admirably focused! 3 months until my wedding, I am having a bit of dress stress in that my waistline has been expanding due to recent bout of laziness, yet I haven’t done anyhing about it!! I am just thinking of getting industrial strength Spanx instead! You sound like you are well on track to looking and feeling your best.

Hahah well… I hope that I can be focused, the last month has been a bit all over.. Hopefully I can get back on the discipline wagon and finish strong before the wedding. It’s just amazing how those bouts of laziness can hit. Especially with the holidays! The spanx plan may have to be my plan B if I can’t accomplish my goals exactly as planned out ;)

Ahhhh okay first of all, although I have never met you, every picture I have seen of you on this blog you are a knockout and beautiful. So really, I don’t think you have to do much of anything!!!! That being said, do not stress about getting into a certain ‘shape’ for the big day. This has been my motto. I want to look and more importantly FEEL good and happy and healthy.

I think your goals are very realistic since you only have a month. Just moderation and keep your inner confidence glowing. Whenever I walk into a room, I gravitate towards the most confident person- that person that is smiling and happy and talking – not the ‘prettiest’ or ‘thinnest’ or any of that. It is totally an inner beauty.

WHY ARE YOU WEARING A HUGE THING OF STARS???? wHAT IS THAT? Im so confused by that picture. Please tell.

You are too sweet!! Thank you so much for the kind words! I don’t want to do anything extreme – I want to look like me. The best version I can be, but I don’t want to go off the deep end to crazy town. And you are SO right – it’s really a FEELING thing. I just feel better when I’m working out and eating better, so even if nothing changes about my body in the next 30 days I know I will feel better if I’ve been taking great care of myself. AND have confidence! Boom. I think I’ll be feeling pretty confident on W-day. I mean, when is the next time in my life I’ll have both my hair and make-up done AND wear a pretty dress. Watch out, it may be a confidence overload ;)

And oh goodness I laughed out loud at wearing the stars. So that’s my wedding dress… but the bag is clear, so I had to do some artistic changes to ensure Adam didn’t get any clues about the dress. HAHA. So it’s my dress. Covered in stars.

I was training for a marathon at the time of my wedding and it really helped me to stay in check with health and fitness and it made me not turn to an unhealthy way of life. I think sticking with the Beachbody workouts and making sure your eating at least 1 or 2 veggies or fruit with each meal you will be fine! You look great!

    • kelly @ racesrepsramblings December 16, 2013 at 4:09 pm #

Yep, that’s super smart! Sadly my knees won’t let me do much running, so I think Beachbody will work well for now. Gotta keep eating those fruits and veggies too – so important. Thanks for the vote of confidence!!

Good luck with your goals! With a month to go, I think staying sane with workouts if a great idea.

Thanks so much! And you are so right. If I’m ever more stressed than usual Adam usually asks “Have you been skipping workouts?” I know it helps me just be a better balanced version of myself. Thanks for the luck!

Wow- so impressive that you kept up four days a week with your show and being sick. By the way, congratulations on a successful show!
I think you said it: keep on keeping on. Work on not being stressed and get over being sick!

    • kelly @ racesrepsramblings December 17, 2013 at 3:35 pm #

Thanks so much! And yeah… 1 of those happened at lunch during work and the other three maybe didn’t have the most focus ;) So it’s thaaat impressive. I didn’t want to get sore because of the show so I didn’t push my max on lifting – excited to get back to heavier weights! :) And you got it sister… focus on low stress and less sick!

I enjoy your two “plans”. And I love the “Eat What’s in the Bag” diet! I SO need to do that! I mean, I do, but it is far too easy to stray (esp this time of year…) GOOD LUCK

    • kelly @ racesrepsramblings December 18, 2013 at 12:07 pm #

Oh I know! Isn’t that great?? Poor Adam and his ‘plan’ that requires lots of Christmas treat eating ;) And the “Eat What’s in the Bag” diet is seriously AWESOME. I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. It takes awhile to train yourself (and occasionally I do stray), but it really works well for my checklist oriented/type-A brain. And you’re right – this time of year makes it SO easy to eat what isn’t in the bag ;)

LOVE the “eat what’s in the bag” diet, it’s essentially what I do most days at work and it easily keeps me on the straight and narrow (whilst saving a few pennies by avoiding buying extras too ;) ) I hope you’re feeling better from your cold, but at least you’ve done your time with illness so should be (fingers crossed!) bug-free for the course of your wedding celebrations… CAN’ T WAIT to see what’s behind the stars!!! x

    • kelly @ racesrepsramblings December 30, 2013 at 12:59 pm #

It is seriously the best diet… I’m so glad I “discovered” it. A game changer! And you’re so right, it makes a huge different on my wallet as well. A win win :) I have recovered from my cold and am feeling much, much better! And you’re right – secretly I’m hoping that I paid my dues in the sickness department so I’ll be all good to go in 19 short days!! :) EEK! Can’t wait to show you what is behind the stars!
